Dujiangyan Kindergarten & Market

A kindergarten and a neighbourhood vegetable market designed as one civic pair — everyday infrastructure treated with the care of cultural building.

Overview

A kindergarten and a neighbourhood vegetable market designed as one civic pair — everyday infrastructure treated with the care of cultural building.

Story

Within the Dujiangyan cultural-tourism city, the commission pairs two programmes that usually receive the least design attention: a kindergarten and a vegetable market. The project treats them as the true civic centre of the neighbourhood.

The kindergarten arranges classrooms around planted courts with a rooftop play landscape; the market is a generous timber-roofed hall whose stalls spill toward the street under deep eaves. Shared parking, gardens and drop-off routes stitch the pair together, so that the daily rhythms of both — morning market, midday play — animate one shared ground. Under construction for SUNAC; 6,000 square metres in total.
