Chongqing Jiangjin Kindergarten

A kindergarten designed as a landscape of play — walls, ground and roof all become places to run, climb and chase, dissolving the boundary between building and playground.

Overview

A kindergarten designed as a landscape of play — walls, ground and roof all become places to run, climb and chase, dissolving the boundary between building and playground.

Story

Conventional kindergartens separate learning from play: classrooms inside, a limited yard outside. Here the diagram is inverted. The field of play expands until wall, ground and roof all become part of it, and the union of building and site produces a small wonderland — a continuous terrain of chasing, climbing and discovery.

The architecture is soft where children meet it: a white perforated skin that filters light, arched openings at child scale, warm timber reveals, and a roofline that swings up like a wave to mark the entrance. Completed in October 2021 for SUNAC, the 4,000-square-metre kindergarten treats joy as a spatial programme in its own right.
